A chance encounter at a fraternity party at UConn in 1970 when Michael had just returned from a summer working in Hawaii was the start of Deb and Michael's journey.
A few twists and turns, ups and downs and 41 years later here we are at Blue Sky 20 years...
After graduating with a teaching degree and coordinating the opening of an all-day Head Start program in New Britain, Deb soon learned that her work schedule highly conflicted with her new husband's night time schedule at a fun new restaurant in Hartford. With youth on her side and endless energy, she took on her full-time teaching job and started to work evenings in the restaurant... 6 months of juggling and soul-searching and she decided to leave teaching to work full-time in the restaurant business.
And she was hooked.
Michael's restaurant career evolved into country club management when Deb took some time off to become a mom in 1979 ... several years later Deb was asked to come out of "retirement" by a business associate and she took on a new project... starting a motoryacht charter business -a little hospitality business on water !
Travel to Key West, Nantucket, Newport, and the islands and
our love of "blue skies and ultraviolet rays" was reborn.
Deb and Michael then teamed up again in 1990 on another twist to hospitality -the creation of a 72 room country hotel and restaurant in Vermont near Okemo. Along with the build-out of the former Stanley Corporate Headquarter building in New Britain into medical and class A office space, the renovation of the former South School into offices in Simsbury,
the project list of creating something from nothing grew...
But a little royal blue building in New Hartford,
vacant and about to go into foreclosure, caught our eye...
reminiscent of a little conch cottage with a lot of work and imagination
and close to home -- a great place to "land".
We bought the property in 1994,
and Blue Sky was born...
